⁴Serbest hekim, Oftalmoloji, İstanbul, Uzm. Dr. Purpose: To present the results of surgically repaired idiopathic macular holes in 13 eyes with drusenoid material accumulation and to evaluate the effect of drusenoid material on anatomical and functional success.
Material and Methods: Thirteen eyes of 13 patients with idiopathic macular holes assosiated with drusenoid material accumulation which had undergone pars plana vitrectomy, internal limiting membrane peeling and gas injection were evaluated retrospectively. Best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure and complications were noted during follow-up visits.
Results: Postoperatively with fundus examination and optical coherence tomography it was seen that in 12 of 13 eyes (92.3%) macular hole was closed. Preoperative average visual acuity was 0,12 (Snellen) and postoperatively it was 0.39. In 8 eyes (61.5%) visual acuity was increased 2 or more lines.
Conclusion: When we compare the surgical results of macular holes assosiated with drusenoid material accumulation with pure macular holes, we see that while anatomical results are similar in both groups, functional success is lower in macular holes with drusenoid material accumulation. To clarify the effect of macular drusenoid material on anatomical and functional success, large patient series and studies with control groups are needed.
