Genetic Therapy in Hereditary Retinal Diseases
Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Bursa, Doç. Dr.
The eye has several advantages for genetic therapy. First, beacuse of the blood-retina barrier, it is protected against immun reactions. Morover, it’s small size allows gene transporting vectors to rich high concentrations without contaminating other systems. In gene therapy, original coding gene sequence or neuroprotective factor containing viral vectors are given within cells. It is expected that the given original coding gene sequence will lead to sentesis of the original protein and thus cells will survive. Neuroprotective factors are expected to prevent or slow photoreseptors degeneration. Recently, many advancements related to the genetetic therapy in hereditary retinal diseases have been reported.
