Purpose: To evaluate the subfoveal choroidal thickness in normal eyes using optical coherence tomography

Materials and Methods: The study consist of 60 eyes of 30 (14 male and 16 female) patients. The choroid was imaged using enhanced depth imaging spectral domain optical coherence tomography (3D OCT-2000, Topcon Corp., Tokyo, Japan). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured from the posterior edge of the retinal pigment epithelium to the chorioscleral interface at the fovea. Two masked graders measured the subfoveal choroidal thickness and the average value was used for analysis.

Results: The mean age of all patients was 50.2±18.8 years (range, 22-79 years), the mean age of male was 48.4±18.3 years and the mean age of female was 52.3±19.4 years. The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness of all patients was 268.8±49.2 μm (range, 145-390 μm), the mean subfoveal choroidal thickness of male was 291.3±53.1 μm and the mean subfoveal choroidal thickness of female was 252.7±40.9 μm. The subfoveal choroid was thicker in male than female and this result was statistically significant (p=0.002).

Conclusion: Subfoveal choroidal thickness is quite variable. The male have thicker subfoveal choroid than female. Keywords : Sex, subfoveal choroidal thickness
