POSTOPERATIVE EXOPLANT REJECTION IN RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY

150 patient had been opereted for retinal detachment surgery in SSK Istanbul Hospital. Scleral buckling elements were removed from 11 (%7.3) eyes because of infection and extrusion. There were 7.5 mm of silicone sponges (507) in 6 (%55) and 5 mm (506,505) sponges in 5 patients (%45). Sponges were renoved in average 3.5 months after the retinal surgery. S. epidermidis were the cause of infection in 5 cases and S. Aureus in 2 cases. Retinal redetachment was observed in 3 (%27) patients after the renoval.The cause of infection may be from contamination at the time of surgery. It may place many months after surgery has been performed. Machanical factors may also ben important including inadequete scleral sutures, anteriorly placed suture knots and sharp edges of big silicone rubber exoplants may controbute to erosion.
