Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker of platelet size and platelet activity, of patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).

Materials and Methods: The medical records of 71 patients diagnosed as BRVO in our clinic between 2009-2013 were reviewed retrospectively. The presence of BRVO was determined based on indirect ophthalmoscopy and fundus fluorescein angiography findings. The laboratory findings of patients including platelets counts, MPV, total cholesterol, high and low density cholesterol and triglyceride were recorded for statistical analysis. The control group consisted of age-and sex-matched 70 patients without any retinal vascular occlusion. Statistical comparison was made between the groups.

Results: Patients with BRVO had significantly higher MPV values (8.08±1.25 fL) compared with the control subjects (7.58±0.93 fL) (p=0.010). There was no significant difference for thrombocyte count between the groups (p=0.468). While the levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride were higher in BRVO group (p<0.05), the levels of low- and high-density cholesterol were not different between the groups (p>0.05).

Conclusion: It was shown in this study that the MPV values were significantly higher in patients with BRVO. Keywords : Branch retinal vein occlusion, mean platelet volume
