Şişli Eftal Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Göz Kliniği
Purpose: To evaluate the use of silicone oil in diabetic vitrectomies and the anatomic and functional results.Method: Between January 1995-October 1998 pars plana vitrectomy was performed and silicone oil was injected in 20 eyes of 20 patients for complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Mean follow up was 14 months.
Results: Anatomic success was achieved in 15 eyes (75%). Visual acuity increased in 8 eyes (40%) and in 11 eyes (55%) ambulatory vision was achieved.
The most frequent complications were cataract formation (66,6%), PVR (15%) and hipotony (10%).
Conclusion: Silicone oil is a long term internal tamponade which increase anatomic and functional success and enable early visual rehabilitation in patients who under went pars plana vitrectomy for complications of PDR. Keywords : Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), vitrectomy, silicone oil
