ANATOMICAL AND VISUAL RESULTS IN EYES WITH FAMILIAL EXUDATIVE VITREORETINOPATHY
1Atatürk Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları ABD2Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları ABD Purpose: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a hereditary condition that may lead to vitreous hemorrhage and traction retinal detachment necessitating surgical intervention. In this paper ocular findings of 5 patients (8 eyes) with FEVR are reviewed.
Materials and methods: Parameters that were noted were the current age, gender, postoperative and follow up retinal status and visual acuity. Five patients (eight eyes) ranging in age from 5 months-28 years (mean 16.3 years) were followed.
Results: Out of 5 patients, 2 were females and 3 were males. Surgery was performed to 2 patients which were at seven years and five months old. Postoperative visual functions and anatomic status of the macula were satisfactory. Two eyes were evaluated as inoperable at their first visit. Laser photocoagulation was performed to 2 eyes, and one of them resulted in an inoperable total retinal detachment. Two eyes were decided to be followed-up.
Conclusion: Since anatomic and visual function results are less promising in eyes with more advanced stages of FEVR, early intervention appears beneficial. Affected patients should be examined regularly over their lifetime. Keywords : Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy
