4AnkaraÜniversitesi, Fen Fakültesi, Biyoloji Bölümü Cigarette smoking increaases the risk of age related macular degeneration (AMD). The aim of this study was to investigate the toxicity of cigarette smoke to rat retina and to davelop an animal model for AMD. Seven rats were exposed to cigarette smoke by using Walton's modified cigarette smoking machine. In control group, rats (n:7) inhaled the room air. Sections were taken from 1 eye of each rat for electron microscopy. Blood tiocyonate levels of the cigarette group were higher than control (p<0.05). In electron microscopy, the cigarette group revealed degeneration of cytoplasmic organelles in cells of the ganglion cell layer, axonal degeneration and shrinkage leading to not full-filling of the endoneurium, degeneration of discs at outer segment of photoreceptor cells' outer processes, depigmented and pigmented areas of the retina pigment epithelium layer, ununiform pigment distribution. In conclusion; this study showed the retinal toxicity of cigarette smoke at ultra structural level. In conjunction with it, this study can be an animal model for AMD but it should be improved further. Keywords : electron microscopy, rat, cigarette, smoke, age-related macular degeneration
