In order to investigate the effects of chronic smoking on ocular hemodynamics, 44 smokers' and 44 non-smokers' ophthalmic artery central retinal artery and short posterior ciliary artery, were examined by color Doppler imaging technique. Peak systolic velocity, end diastolic velocity, average velocity were measured and the resistivity index, pulsatility index, were calculated. End diastolic velocity, average velocity, resistivity index and pulsatility index values for ophthalmic artery and peak systolic velocity, average velocity values for short posterior ciliary artery in the smokers were significantly different from those of the non-smokers (p<0.05). The effects of chronic smoking on the ocular hemodynamics, determined in this study, should be considered as a risk factor especially in the vascular pathologies of eyes.
