RISK FACTORS FOR AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATIONS

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the factors that play a role in the occurrence of age related macular degeneration (ARMD).Materials and Methods: Forty-two consecutive patients diagnosed by age related macular degeneration and 30 age-matched control subjects were included to this study. Age, gender, smoking, alcohol drinking, hypertension, diabetes, colour of iris, cataract, hemoglobin, fibrinogen, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels were detected and two groups were compared.
Results: According to the investigation, hypertension incidence and fibrinogen level were higher and HDL cholesterol level was lower in the age related macular degeneration group comparing to the control group.
Conclusion: In addition to age, a lot of factors play a role in the aetiology of ARMD. Our study showed that ARMD has a close relationship with hypertension, fibrinogen and HDL cholesterol. Keywords : Age related macular degeneration, Risk factors
