G.Ü.Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları ABD.
Purpose: To compare current surgical techniques for macular holes and to assess the surgical results of our clinical applications. Methods: Twelve patients diagnosed as stage 3 or 4 macular hole were treated surgically in Gazi University Medical Faculty Eye Clinic. Surgical technique is composed of pars plana vitrectomy, removal of the posterior hyaloid and application of intravitreal gas tamponade. Membrane peeling was added to the surgery in 2 cases with epiretinal membrane and, internal limitting membrane was removed in the last two cases. No adjunctive additive was used in any of the cases.
Results: The mean follow-up interval was 13.4 months, with a range of 3 to 38 months. All of the macular holes were closed anatomically. Visual acuity increased in 66.6 % of cases and unchanged in 25%.
Conclusion: The success rate of macular hole surgery with complete vitrectomy, posterior hyaloid removal and preretinal and internal limitting membrane peeling is very satisfactory and comparable to those with adjunctive additives. Keywords : Macular hole, surgical treatment
