THE EFFECT OF VITRECTOMY TO ANATOMICAL AND VISUAL PROGNOSIS IN COMBINED DIABETIC TRACTION-RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT

S. Demirel Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hast. Anabilim Dalı, ISPARTA Purpose: To investigate and discuss the effect of vitrectomy on anatomical and visual prognosis in diabetic tractional-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
Material and Method: Fifty-seven eyes of the 54 diabetic patients (ages between 17-73, Female/Male: 30/24) with tractional-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were vitrectomized. Circling scleral buckling was applied in 47 % of the patients, air-gas mixture injected in % 30, silicon oil injection in 70 %, retinotomy-retinectomy 8% of the patients and reoperation was applied in 25 of the patients who had vitrectomy.
Result: Retinal reattachment was obtained in 75 % of cases (anatomical success). The visual acuity was increased in 32 %, decreased in 7 % and not changed in 61 % of the cases. Intra-vitreal hemorrhage was seen in 15 %, iatrogenic retinal tear developed in 22 %, crystalline lens opacification in 26 %, neovascular glaucoma in 8 %, and phthisis bulbi developed in 7 % of cases.
Conclusion: Combined with modern techniques, photocogulation, and tamponade materials have favorable effects on the anatomical and visual prognosis of diabetic tractional-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
