CENTRAL RETINAL ARTERY HEMODYNAMIC CHANGES IN FUNDUS COLOBOMA AND TILTED DISC

Optic disc associated fundus coloboma and tilted disc are congenital anomalies of the optic nerve head. Both they may be associated with vascular anomalies. This study was designed to assess retinal vascular hemodynamic changes in the optic disc associated fundus coloboma and tilted disc. Resistive indexes (RI) were measured from central retinal arteries in 16 eyes of 8 patients with papillo-retinochoroidal coloboma (Type 6 fundus coloboma), and in 17 eyes of 10 patients with tilted disc by Doppler sonography. Normal RI values were also obtained from central retinal arteries of 20 healthy eyes of 10 volunteers and of other eyes of patients with unilateral tilted disc. The results have shown that there was increase in central retinal artery blood flow in eyes with optic disc associated fundus coloboma (p<0.001) and decrease in eyes with tilted disc compared to normal values (p<0.01). Decreased RI and increased blood flow in central retinal artery in the optic disc associated fundus coloboma was attributed to lack of support in vessels of huge colobomatous region. Angulation of central retinal artery along with oblique penetration of optic nerve to the globe in eyes with tilted disc was possibly the cause of increased RI compared to normal eyes.
