Purpose : It has been investigated that the effects of the membranes covered optic nerve head removed totally by vitrectomy techniques, related to visual prognosis.
Methods : In the seventeen proliferative diabetic retinopathy cases with epipapillary membranes were completely removed by vitrectomy techniques. Histopatologic studies of the membranes were done using conventional hematoxylin and eosin staining as well as silver stain techniques, Preoperative and postoperative visual acuities of the patients were compared.
Results : In 53% of the patients (9) intraoperative hemorrhages occured. In 12% (2) optic atrophies have been evolved. While 18% of the patients (3) have a visual acuities of counting fingers from 50 cm., 82% (14) have been found visual acuities of counting fingers from 1 meter'in 64% (11) handmovements-light perception, in 12% (2) no light perception. In histopatologic studies, in 64,7% of the specimes, vascularized glial tissue, in 35.3% (6) nonvascularized glial tissue, in 76.4% (13) axon were identified.
Conclusions : The totally removal of the epipapillary membranes affects visual prognosis unfavorably.
Keywords : Proliferative diabetic retinopathy, optic disc membranes
