THE IMPORTANCE OF FLASH VEP IN PREDICTING THE VISUAL POTENTIAL IN OCULAR TRAUMAS

This study was undertaken to evaluate the value of flash visually evoked potential (FVEP) for the prediction of postoperative visual acuity level in severely injured eyes with opaqua medias. Forty eyes of 40 cases with severe open globe injuries were studied by Flash-visually evoked response at 10 Hertz (Hz) stimuli. Preoperatively obtained recordings were classified as normal, subnormal or negative in comparison to amplitude of fellow eye and evaluated for predicting postoperative Snellen acuity in injured eye. Postoperatively, the correlation of normal-FVEP results, with 0.2 or more Snellen acuities was observed in 16 of 22 (72.7%) cases. Correlation of subnormal and negative-FVEP with 0.1 or less acuities was observed in 15 of 18 cases (83.3%). We found that flash visually evoked potential testing at 10 Hz stimuli is of sufficient predictive value for postoperative visual outcome in most cases with severe eye trauma.
