EVALUATION OF CHOROIDAL BLOOD FLOW IN ATROPHIC TYPE AGE RELATEDMACULAR DEGENERATION
1Eskişehir Devlet Hastanesi2Osmangazi Üniv. Tıp Fak. Göz Hast. In order to evaluate the choroidal blood-flow in atrophic type age-related macular degeneration (AMD), pulsatile ocular blood flow (POBF) of 12 patients with atrophic type AMD (average age 69.0 10), and of 13 age matched volunteers (average age 67.3 7) with no ophthalmoscopic macular changes and of a middle aged 25 normal subjects (average age 42.1 7) as the control groups were measured. The mean POBF values in atrophic type AMD group was 514.7 106 1/min., and in the age-matched group it was 526 79 1/min. There was no significant difference between the POBF values of both groups (p>0.05). However, in the middle age group (663.1 148 1/min). POBF values were significantly high (p<0.05). It is concluded that decreased choroidal blood flow in aged population is not the only factor in pathogenesis of atrophic type AMD but may take part in its development and evolution with the existence of other pathogenetic factors. Keywords : Atrophic macular degeneration, pulsatile ocular blood flow
