Hemodynamic Alterations In Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy which is a syndrome showing progression and complications is caused by hemodynamic changes. The changes primarily related to angiopathy have been investigated by several techniques. In this study, diabetic patients were grouped in preretinopathy (preR), nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (nonPDR), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and post-panretinal photocoagulation group (PRP) and maximum systolic blood flow veloicties and flow patterns in central retinal artery (CRA), central retinal vein (CRV), posterior ciliary artery (PCA) and ophthalmic artery (OA) were examined by using color Doppler ultrasonography. Differences between preR and nonPDR groups were significant in the CRA and differences between preR and PDR, preR and PRP groups were significant in the CRV, preR group showing higher systolic blood flow velocity values (p <0.05). No statistically significant difference could be shown in PCA and OA values between the groups. Also, no correlation could be shown in the velocities between retinopathy groups, in case of presence or absence of hypertension.
