We reviewed 1015 primary regmatogenous retinal detachment patients of at least 20 months follow-up who underwent surgery between 1984-1994 (January) using conventional methods in Gazi University Medical Faculty Department of Ophthalmology. General characteristics of the patients, etiologic factors, anatomic and visual results and possible factors those may have a role on these results were evaluated. 629 of 1015 patients (621.1%) were male and 386(38.9%) were female. Mean age was 46.5±17.75. Myopia, aphakia and lattice degeneration were found to be the most frequent etiologic factors. Anatomical success rates were found 91% (923 cases) and 95% (965 cases) with the first and second operations respectively. A retinal detachment period longer than 3 months, no detected retinal breaks, presence of PVR, 3 or more detached retinal quadrants and preoperative visual acuity less than 1/10 seemed to effect anatomical success rates (p<0.05). Patients with a detachment period longer than I month, presence of PVR, macular detachment, 2 or more detached retinal quadrants and preoperative visual acuity less than 1/10 were found to present poor visual results (p<0.05). 9% (91 cases) of cases needed reoperation and 46% (42 cases) of these were reattached by conventional methods.
