GATA Göz Hastalıkları AD, Ankara Purpose: We investigated the clinical effectiveness of antioxidant therapy for age related macular degeneration (AMD) which has unclear aetiology and treatment.
Material and Methods: The results of 316 eyes of 198 patients which had been diagnosed as AMD and accepted to administer antioxidant treatment were compared with the results of 98 eyes of 61 patients with AMD who didn't accept antioxidant treatment used as control group in a randomised controlled prospective study at GMMA Eye clinics between 1993-2001.
Results: There were statistical differences between the vision values of two groups from the beginning .to the end of the study. But we could not find any difference between two groups in the SRN development.
Conclusion: We found that the antioxidant treatment beneficial in the treatment of age related macular degeneration but study will be continued and we hope that it will be possible to say more about this topic. Keywords : Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Antioxidant treatment.
