Retinal Tacks Revisited
Ankara Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hast., 3. Göz Kliniği, Ankara, Op. Dr.
Before the use of heavy perfluorocarbon liquids in the management of folded and fixed retina or giant retinal tears with inverted retinal flaps and stiffness, retinal tacks were developed. Surgeons used silicone oil or gas tamponade in addition to some attempts to attach the retina via nylon sutures for retinal flap transvitreoretinal fixation, retinal incarceration, or transscleral suturing, which were all very challenging methods. In this study, a review of retinal tacks, with new developments for their use will be presented, and recent experience with their use in epiretinal electronic array research will be mentioned.
