Optical Coherence Tomgraphy Fındıngs in Early Solar Maculopathy

3S.B.Göztepe Eğitim Hastanesi Göz Hastalıkları Kliniği, İstanbul, Prof. Dr. Solar maculopathy is a well recognized entity of macular damage caused by sungazing or direct viewing of a solar eclipse.It is characterized by a yellow white foveolar plaque which fades over several weeks and is sometimes followed by foveolar distortion or hole formation. In this study we present the Optical coherence tomography (OCT) III findings of a patient with early solar retionopathy after the solar eclipse on 29 March 2006. We obtained the OCT scans of the patient 6 days,1 month and 2 months after the solar eclipse. There was a deep hyperreflective lesion in the foveola in the early period. A segmentation of the inner High Reflective Layer (HRL) and thinning of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) layer was also noted. During the follow up the hyperreflective lesion got smaller and completely dissappeared in the second month. The fragmentation of the inner HRL and the thinning of the RPE layer remained unchanged. As a result, using OCT III we can describe the dimentions and intraretinal localisation of the lesion in solar retinopathy, we can diagnose any fotoreceptor damage, and chronic seguelaes follwing up the patient during.
