Purpose : To evaluate the surgical technique and outcome in eyes with lens luxation or subluxation that underwent pars plana phacofragmantation. Methods : Fourteen eyes of 14 patients that underwent combined pars plana vitrectomy, pars plana phacofragmantation and transsclerally sutured foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were included in the study. In all cases surgical technique, surgical and visual outcomes were evaluated.
Results : The mean age of the patients was 58.2 ± 7.1 (range 50-66) years, and the mean follow-up was 6.4 ± 2.3 months (4-14). The preoperative visual acuity was changing between hand motion and 0.3. In 11 eyes for luxated lenses into the vitreous, and in three eyes for the subluxated lenses pars plana phacofragmantation was 'performed. In all eyes, transsclerally sutured foldable acrylic lOLs was implanted. The postoperative mean visual acuity was 0.5 ± 0.1 (0.1-0.7). In the postoperative second month a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment was detected in one eye (7.1 %).
Conclusion : Pars plana phacofragmantation can be a surgical alternative in lens luxation and subluxation especially for the cases in which foldable transclerally sutured IOL implantation through small incision was planned.
