POSTINFECTIOUS OPTIC NEUROPATHY

Purpose: Evaluation of the post-viral optic neuropathy seen in three patients during an epidemy of influenza infection.Methods: Three patients were seen with loss of vision and visual field defects following an influenza-like disease. Two patients had moderate loss of vision and visual field defects.
Results: Demyelinization of the optic nerve on fat suppression post-contrast MRI was demonstrated in one of these patients. These two patients recovered spontaneously. A third patient; who had bilateral optic neuritis had complete recovery in a week following IV methylprednisolone treatment.
Conclusion: The presenting symptoms and signs of these patients are of postviral optic neuropathy. These patients are presented as examples of this type of optic neuropathy and treatment strategies in similar cases are discussed.
