Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with intermediate AMD were evaluated by FAF, fundus fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) after a detailed ophthalmic examination. Central 14ºx14º visual field was tested with PHP (Foresee PHP, Notalvision). A hyperacuity deviation map and hyperacuity defect maps were recorded by PHP. Patients having high false positive or false negative ratios in PHP were excluded. The correlation between the FAF and PHP findings was also investigated.
Results: Fifteen eyes of 15 patients with a mean age of 69.1±5.6 years and a mean visual acuity of 0.8±0.05 were included. Mean macular thickness was 173.9±30.2 μm by OCT. Significant scotoma in 11 eyes was detected in the hyperacutiy deviation map by PHP; however, in 4 eyes the hyperacuity deviation map was entirely normal. Estimated retinal lesions in the hyperacuity defect map demonstrated by PHP matched the increased autofluorescence areas by FAF.
Conclusion: In the majority of cases increased autofluorescence areas were correlated to estimated retinal localizations detected by PHP. FAF and PHP appear to be effective for demonstrating central macular dysfunction in intermediate AMD.
