Materials and Methods: Twenty-one eyes of 20 patients (12 male, 8 female; mean age:50.2 years) who underwent encircling scleral buckling and PPV for retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy due to high myopia (more than six diopters) were evaluated retrospectively. The patients were assessed for anatomical success, functional success and post-operative complications.
Results: Patients were followed-up for average 6 months. In all of the eyes anatomical success was achieved after the operation. In none of the eyes, recurrent retinal detachments occurred. The visual acuity improved in 76% of eyes and remained the same in 24% of eyes. Postoperative complications were transient ocular hypertension, migration of silicon oil into the anterior chamber, silicon oil emulsification and existence of liquid perfluorocarbon bubble in the anterior chamber.
Conclusion: Encircling scleral buckling and PPV is very effective both anatomically and functionally in patients with retinal detachments due to high myopia.
