3Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Ankara, Prof. Dr. Purpose: To compare scleral buckling, pars plana vitrectomy and their combination for the treatment of pseudophakic retinal detachment (PRD)
Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective evaluation patients who were treated for PRD between January 01 and March 06 in Department of Ophthalmology at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine. Patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, trauma history, proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) higher than grade B, macular hole, redetachment were excluded from the study. The patients were grouped according to the type of surgical intervention, group I received scleral buckling (SB), group II pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and group III received a combination treatment of both (SB+PPV). Preoperative and postoperative completely ocular examination, the type of surgical technics, type of intraocular tamponade used, intraoperative and postoperative complications were analyzed. Kruskal-Wallis H Test and Wilcoxon Test was used to compare preoperative and postoperative characteristics of 3 groups using SPSS 13 statistical software.
Results: Sixty four eyes of sixty three patient was included in the study. There were 32 (50%) eyes in group I, 10 (15.7%) eyes in group II and 22 (34.3%) eyes in group III. Preoperative mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (LogMAR) were 1.8, 1.5, 2.3 in groups I, II and III respectively (p<0.05). At final visit, postoperative mean BCVA were 0.8, 1.5, 2.3 in groups I, II and III respectively (p>0.05). Reattachment with single surgery was achieved in 71.9% eyes in group I, 80% eyes in group II and 81.8% eyes in group III (p>0.05)). There was no statistically significant difference between the three groups in postoperative complications except intraocular pressure
Conclusion: In our study; the highest anatomical success was achieved in the SB+PPV group and the lowest anatomical success was in the SB group, and the highest functional success was achieved in the PPV group and the lowest functional success was in the SB+PPV group.
