M.D. Professor, Ege University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, Izmir/TURKEY
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), especially its exudative form, is an important disease affecting the elderly people of developed countries and causing serious visual loss. Many treatment alternatives have been tried up to date, however, the patients were being provided some benefits from the treatment in only recent years. Laser treatment was formerly the leading option like in many other retinal diseases, followed by photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the first time at the beginning of the 2000s, providing an acceptable achievement against the inevitable visual loss. Although the present treatment approach is anti-VEGF agents, some indications are still valid for laser and PDT in ARMD patients. In this article, current situation of laser and photodynamic therapy in ARMD will be updated.
