It is the leading cause of legal blindness in the working-age population of developed countries. Control of hyperglisemia, blood pressure and serum lipid levels can prevent diabetic retinopathy onset and progression. However well diabetes control does not eliminate the potential for vision complications. Metabolic stresss which plays a role in the diabetic retinopathy increases the oxidative stress then vascular damage is formed. The degree of tissue damage depends on the balance between the antioxidant defance system and free radicals. In this review, the role of free radicals and antioxidants in diabetic retinopathy is discussed. Keywords : Oxidative stress, micronutrition, diabetic retinopathy
