Ege Üniv. Tıp Fak. Göz Hast. Anabilim Dalı
Age - related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversibl central vision loss among people aged 65 years or older. The causes and factors associated with the progression of AMD are unknown presently.Animal studies and some epidemiologic studies have suggested that antioxidant vitamins and minerals may be important in the prevention and treatment of AMD. But nutritional supplements are not clinically proven therapy for AMD. The potential beneficial effects and adverse side effects of the nutritional supplements have not been fully evaluated in carefully conducted clinical trials.
Pharmacological therapy with interferon alfa - 2a as an antiangiogenic drug is an attractive the-oretical alternative for the treatment of exudative AMD. But the results of "Pharmacological Therapy for Macular Degeneration Study Group" suggests that there is no benefit to interferon alfa - 2a therapy for choroidal neovascularization secondary to AMD and side effects are also common and often severe.
