Branch retinal vein occlusion commonly affects patients in the 5th and 6th decade of life, especially with hypertension and arteriosclerosis as common risk factors. The occlusion occurs distal to an arteriovenous crossing, usually with artery overlying the vein. Visual acuity is reduced from intraretinal hemorrhages, macular edema, capillary nonperfusion and vitreous hemorrhages secondary to retinal neovascularization. Laser treatment has been shown to be effective for the sequelae to some extent. There has been widespread interest to develop alternative therapeutic approaches, of which the latest one is arteriovenous adventitial sheathotomy.
