2Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Çocuk Hastalıkları A.D., İstanbul Purpose: To determine the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and the risk factors associated with its development
Materials and Methods: 465 premature infants who were ≤37 gestational weeks, ≤3500 gram birth weight were followed for to determine risc factors that were associated with development of ROP. Complete ophthalmologic examination was done to all babies.
Results: Among 465 infants who fit the screening criteria, ROP was detected in 141 (30.3%) infants. In univariate analysis for ROP, oxygen treatment, duration of supplemental oxygen, gestational age, birth weight, blood transfusion, hypoxia, anemia, septicaemia, intraventricular haemorrhage, ventilation were associated with increased incidence of ROP. However, in multiple logistic regression analyses, gestational age, birth weight, anemia, high oxygen treatment and duration of oxygen tretment were the most important factors for development of ROP.
Conclusion: ROP has been recognized as one of the most important causes of childhood blindness in developed countries. But blindeness is preventable ıf patients are diagnosed early and treated properly.Because of this, we had to determine risc factors and make apropriate screening programs for ROP.
