Trypan Blue Staining of Epiretinal and Internal Limiting Membranes
SSK Ankara Göz Hastalıkları Merkezi ve Göz Bankası 2.Göz Kliniği
Purpose: To use trypan blue 0. 06% for staining the internal limiting membrane and epiretinal membrane to facilitate their removal in proliferative vitreoretinopathy and macular hole surgery. Material and Methods: Nine eyes of 9 patients with epiretinal membrane and 6 eyes of 5 patients with macular hole grade 2or 3 underwent vitrectomy and 0.06% trypan blue solution was used to stain epiretinal and internal limiting membrane.
Results: Postoperatively, five of nine eyes with epiretinal membrane had a visual improvement of two or more snellen lines while in 4 eyes no visual improvement was noted. Visual improvement could be achieved in three of 6 eyes with macular hole, but in the other three visual acuity remained unchanged. We experienced no manifest complication due to trypan blue during and after the operation.
Conclusion: In vitreoretinal surgery trypan blue staining facilitates not only visibility of epiretinal and internal limiting membranes but also their complete removal. Keywords : Trypan blue, epiretinal membrane, internal limiting membrane
