The surgical removal of subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane was first performed in two patients with ocular histoplasmosis in 1991. After the removal of the membrane through retinotomy following a standart three-port pars plana vitrectomy, recurrens of choroidal neovascular membrane was observed in the half of cases in period of two years. In their two years’ study Submacular Surgery Trials research group didn’t recommend surgical removal of new subfoveal choroidal neovascular membrane in agerelated macular degeneration. However they reported that surgery for subfoveal hemorrhagic choroidal neovascular membrane in age-related macular degeneration had reduced the risk of severe visual acuity loss.Macular translocation surgery was first performed in 1993 with the purpose of rotating the fovea a way from diseased structures to an healty area. The translocation of macula can be performed with or without retinectomy. In the %13-36 of patients underwent macular translocation surgery an increase of visual acuity by 3 or more lines has been achieved. When the other treatment modalities fail in treatment of choroidal neovascular membrane, submacular surgery and macular translocation may be considered as a choice of treatment Keywords : Submacular surgery, macular translocation
